Movin' On Out

Wow, next week is another big milestone in our house.  Next week my oldest son is moving out of house and into his first apartment.  He doesn't seem nervous at all.  His dad and I are nervous enough for all 3 of us.  While it is certainly time- he's almost 24, we still worry that he doesn't know what he's getting into, that he won't be able to afford his expenses, and the list goes on.  Rationally I know that my son is ready for this step into independence and adulthood and I'm not worried about the empty nest, but as a mother I'm still a bit worried about my little bird leaving the nest.

In addition to practically furnishing the apartment with everything from our house (whatever happened to hitting Goodwill and garage sales to furnish your first apartment?) I'm making a set of New Address Cards for his to send out to friends and family- well probably just family because I'm sure that he'll IM, text, Facebook and/or Twitter his friends about the move and his new contact information!

Anyway, this is my way of keeping busy and help with the move in my own special way.

Thoughts and Prayers

Tonight I had to make a sympathy card.  This is one type of card I simply do not enjoy making.  The occasion is simply not a happy one- a death, even if expected is still a deeply sad event.

This morning I learned that my cousin's mother-in-law died after a long illness.  I never had the pleasure of meeting her, but from what I heard she was a loving mother and grandmother, deeply religious and devoted to her family.  Having lost my own mother-in-law about 10 years ago, I remember the sorrow of losing a parent.  I hope this card can adequately express our thoughts at the time.

It's Official- I'm a Winner

Woo hoo, even though it has been posted for a week on the internet, today I received the "official" notice from Stampin' Up! that my Fourth of July banner was a winner in the So Shelli Creative Challenge.  For the past week I have been on cloud nine.  It's been quite awhile since anything I created has been selected for publication or has won a prize!

Now come the challenge.  I get to pick ANY stamp set out of the current catalog.  This has my head spiining.  I feel like the little kid in the candy store with a quarter to spend (Yes, I am showing my age, since a quarter wouldn't even get a kid a pack of gun today).  There are just so many choices and so many items on my wish list. 

Since I can't seem to make up my mind, I am hoping you will help.  Leave me a comment telling me which stamp set you would like to see some samples from.  Plus, so that I'm not the only winner here, on Friday I pick one of the lucky comments and I will send that lucky person a Create-A-Calendar kit (even though the year is half over, there are still alot of creative things you can do with the goodies that come in the kit.)  So stampers, tell me I should pick.

Don't you just LOVE those teasers.  You just "know" that something has to be good if it was "seen on TV"!  Well tonight's card is not exactly "As seen on TV", but it is a variation of a card shown in the new 2009-2010 Stampin' Up! Idea Book & Catalog.

For my card, the layout is nearly identical, the technique (Poppin' Pastels) is identical, but I changed up the colors, used a different saying (because I don't have the set used in the catalog sample) and omitted the stitching (mostly because I hate to sew- goes back to high school home ec and a disastrous attempt to sew a dress, but I digress).

Supplies Used:

Ink: Versamark, Always Artichoke and Rich Razzleberry classic inks

Card Stock: Very Vanilla, Rich Razzleberry, and Always Artichoke

Others:  Large purple brad from Circle Ice Rhinestone Brads, Stampin' Pastels (Always Artichoke and Apricot Appeal) and Sponge Daubers.

When I went to make this card, I had to do some digging through my stash of supplies because it has been so long since I used my Stampin' Pastels that they had sunk way into the bottom of the drawers!  I can still remember when the pastels were my go-to coloring medium.  Having used them again, I will have to challenge myself to start using them more often.

Bitty Box = Big Surprises

Tonight I pulled out another one of my new goodies from the new Stampin' Up! Catalog- the Bitty Box & Envelopes Bigz XL Die.

This is a super quick and easy project to make- the Bitty Box and the coordinating die cut envelope assemble quite easily.

For the box, I used a piece from the Razzleberry Lemonade Designer Series Paper.  The envelope is Crushed Curry textured card stock.  Both of these are cut with the Bitty Box & Envelopes Bigz die, using the Big Shot machine.  They are folded along the crease lines and then secured using Sticky Strip (Snail just isn't strong enough to hold, especially for the textured card stock). 

Assembled, the box is 2 1/2" square and 3/4" tall.  The envelopes are 2 1/4" square.

For the little greeting card, I cut a piece of Bermuda Bay card stock to 2" x 4" and folded in half.  Next, I cut a piece of Watercolor paper to 1 3/4" square.  Using Jet Black Stazon ink, I stamped the tea cup  from Fast & Fun Notes onto the Watercolor Paper and then water colored them with the following classic ink pads: Bermuda Bay, Melon Mambo, So Saffron (I tried Crushed Curry, but it was too dark), Apricot Appeal, Certainly Celery, and Always Artichoke.  You can't really tell from the picture, but I used the Close to Cocoa Stampin' Write Marker to color in the center of the Black Eyed Susans.

I fit four of the little cards and coordinating envelopes into the Bitty Box.

Once it was closed, I decided that the box needed a little something, so I tied a piece of Bermuda Bay Polka Dot grosgrain ribbon and added the beaded hat pin from the Pretties kit.

Even though the finished cards are certainly small, they still can pack alot of Wow.

Another Medallion Card

Tonight I used the Medallion stamp again, this time to make a tall, 4" x 8 1/2", card- a size that I don't make very often.

The card base is a piece of Soft Suede card stock cut to 8 1/2"x 8" and folded in half lengthwise.  Next, I cut a 1" strip off of the right hand side of the card front and layered this with a 2" strip of Bermuda Bay card stock,punched with the Scallop punch and another thin strip of Crushed Curry card stock.

The Medallion was stamped with Soft Suede classic ink on a piece of Very Vanilla card stock.  Next I pulled out one of the first stamps I ever bought from Stampin' Up!- Itty Bitty Backgrounds- and used the spatter stamp with Crushed Curry and Bermuda bay classic ink to create the speckled background.

I don't know about you, but I thought that I was really going to miss last year's In Colors.  Instead,I am enjoying the new group so much that I hardly ever find myself reaching for my stash of the old colors.  If you like the In Colors as well, check out my In Color Bundle.
